Some equipment vendors can be hesitant when it comes to providing financing to their customers. However, vendor financing is a significant way to gain a strategic advantage over the competition. Particularly for small and medium-sized dealers, having a financing program levels the playing field by allowing them to compete against large manufacturers, particularly when a manufacturer has a captive finance unit. In addition to offering customers the service advantage of being a local, familiar contact, it is possible to offer attractive financing terms that give customers a one-stop shopping option.

Many equipment dealers understandably do not have expertise in financing since their focus is on equipment. They also don’t have the resources or time to invest in building an equipment finance program. Creating an equipment finance program is not complicated high finance, and can be a turn-key operation. A simple tool using the cost and description of the equipment is all that’s needed to provide a professional quote to include in every sales proposal. With an understanding of the benefits of vendor finance for both dealers and their customers, and how to set up a program, dealers will be well positioned to land new customers and strengthen existing relationships.

Why is it so important to offer financing to customers? To start, offering attractive financing options significantly reduces the customers’ incentive to check out competitors’ prices or explore a financing option that could delay the sale or lead the customer toward a competing dealer. It’s also more feasible for a customer to make a monthly payment than to make a lump sum cash outlay. Preserving cash right now is near and dear to the hearts of many small business owners and financing gives them more flexibility to manage their cash flow. Another reason is that often customers don’t know if they’ll want to own the equipment in three or four years. Several financing plans delay this decision, giving the customer the advantage of time to see if it’s worthwhile to actually own the equipment in the future.

From the dealers’ perspective offering financing allows them to establish a relationship of trust that enables repeat business when additional equipment is needed and new advances warrant equipment upgrades. The following steps outline how to set up a vendor finance program and also explain more about “why?”

Essential Steps for Dealers to Establish a
Successful Vendor Finance Program

1. Match Your Sales Strategy to Your Financial Strategy. Dealers typically want to build a sustainable stable of customers from whom they can get repeat business every two or three years as well as continue to add new ones. However, they need to recognize that if they don’t offer financing, they are not supporting their sales strategy. Their financing strategy should integrate with their sales strategy.
Remember, cash equals a transaction, but financing equals a relationship.

2. Find the Right Finance Partner. Once the decision has been made to offer financing, it’s highly recommended to find the right financing partner. When evaluating a potential financing company, some key questions to begin with are “Do they have my industry expertise?”, “Are they going to be financially strong enough to support my program long-term?” and “Are they a full service financing company?” Industry expertise will ensure a knowledgeable partner with a proven record of success in building and maintaining programs in the dealer’s market. Financial stability is important to the longevity and strength of the program and will save the inconvenience of reestablishing a new program down the road. For example, some leasing divisions within larger companies might change their business strategy and no longer support existing industries or dealership programs.

Finally, selecting a full service equipment financing company is critical to successfully executing the other steps. To find a partner, check out online resources, such as the Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s provider database, as well as industry trade shows at:

http://equipmentfinanceadvantage.org/fp/.

3. Integrate Financing Into Your Sales Process. The keys to success once a financing partner is in place is to roll the program out to the sales people so they are comfortable with offering it, fully integrate it into their sales process, and include a finance option with every sales proposal . The equipment finance partner should be responsible for providing the time and resources to train the dealer’s sales people, whether in person, by webinar or other learning channel. They should offer coaching on using financing as a closing tool and to capture repeat business. The right financing partner should be an extension of the dealership’s sales team and be available to assist in closing transactions with its customers. It should also be incorporated into the human resource sales training process to ensure all new sales reps can effectively present it.

4. Use Financing as a Marketing Tool to Grow Your Business. Take advantage of the equipment finance partner’s marketing expertise. Dealers should leverage the resources of their financing partner to market jointly to their customer base, whether through direct mail, electronic or online promotions, or trade shows. Co-branding marketing pieces not only offer equipment with attractive payment options, they will make the dealer’s organization look more formidable against larger captive competitors since it has its own financing capability. Even the monthly invoices can provide marketing opportunities with inserts of dealership news and offers. In addition, a good equipment finance partner will help target specific customers to help grow the dealer’s business because this creates more customers for financing—a true win-win partnership.

5. Commit to One Finance Partner. With the right full-service finance company, the deeper the dealer’s commitment is to the partnership the greater the services they can receive. Generally, the credit window becomes larger, as do the marketing, training and other support services. It’s also far less complicated than using multiple financing sources and trying to maintain relationships on multiple fronts.

6. Offer Financing For Small Ticket Equipment, Too. Often dealers of smaller ticket equipment don’t consider it necessary to offer financing because of the smaller price points. However, keep in mind that customers don’t finance equipment only to avoid paying cash. They enjoy accounting, cash flow, tax and obsolescence advantages, among other benefits, that make financing equipment more attractive. It also helps solidify the relationship, lock out competitors and focus on long-term, repeatable business.

If dealers are only selling equipment and not bringing financing options that will enable them to be a one-stop solution for their customers, either their customers are going to find competitors that do, or their competitors are going to find those customers. Taking these steps builds a competitive edge so they don’t.

Roxtec’s C RS T’s cable entry seals are IP69K (industrial hot water high pressure cleaning) approved. The Roxtec C RS T cable entry seals are for single cable or pipe penetrations and allow the routing of pre-terminated cables without cutting or splicing for installation in cabinets and enclosures. Other important features of the C RS T include round cut-outs, a threaded sleeve for quick and easy installation. In addition, the product line meets UL/NEMA 4, 4X, 12 and 13, IP 66/67 and IP69K specifications.

Roxtec’s EzEntry™ simplifies cable sealing with a lightweight cable entry seal for cabinets and enclosures. It enables users to seal around multiple pre-terminated cables of different sizes in one single frame opening. No more cutting off connectors. They are delivered as complete kit solutions including a non-metallic frame, an integrated compression unit and adaptable sealing modules for different dimensions of cables. In addition, EZEntry™ is certified for IEC60529, IP 66/67 and UL/NEMA 4, 4x, 12, 13 protection.

Engineers reduce overall cabinet size through Roxtec’s compact designs and save major labor costs by eliminating the need to cut and re-attach connectors. Both designs also allow for cost-effective maintenance and future expansion with easy re-entry into the system. Designers can avoid the liabilities of product and systems’ failure and will have fewer warranty claims.

The contest began with teams of professional and student welders running in a “scrap dive.” The competitors selected scrap metal, which they turned into pieces of art. Each team had eight hours to complete their sculpture.

The theme of the competition this year was wildlife. A panel of judges awarded the top spot in the Professional Division to the team from NUCOR Steel of Darlington, SC for their sculpture depicting an alligator and turtles in a South Carolina wetlands scene. Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) of Sumter, SC won the Student Division with a friendly-faced bear playing behind a boulder.

The team from Honda won second place in the Professional Division with their sculpture of a pair of cranes and a sea turtle nestled in a lily-pad filled pond. Vulcraft’s colorful sculpture of a majestic bald eagle claimed the third place prize in the Professional Division.
Florence Career Center placed second in the Student Division with their depiction of a large-mouth bass springing out of the water. The team from Florence Darlington Technical College won third place in the Student Division with their sculpture of a mountain landscape featuring a coyote baying at the moon.

All of the artwork was auctioned off at the end of the competition, and raised nearly $10,000 to benefit the FDTC Educational Foundation’s scholarship fund. NUCOR’s sculpture fetched a record $2,500.

The NUCOR team won ESAB welding helmets and gloves for each team member. The CCTC team won $5,000 worth of their choice of ESAB welding equipment for use at their school, as well as helmets and gloves for each team member.

The second and third place Student Division teams each won their choice of $2,500 worth of ESAB equipment, and all members of the top three Student and Professional Division teams won welding helmets and gloves from ESAB.

“The FDTC Welding Competition is an exciting event for the entire community,” said Steve Molenda, ESAB Global Marketing Communications and Brand Strategy Manager. “It’s a lot of fun to see both the professional welders and the up-and-coming student welders channel their creativity into these amazing pieces of art. This event shows off the skills local welders have as well as the creativity that is part of the craft.”

ESAB is a long-time supporter of welding education. ESAB partnered with Florence- Darlington Technical College in 2001 to establish a professional welding program. ESAB generously outfitted the FDTC Welding Program with a wide array of welding and cutting equipment, and they continue to support FDTC’s efforts to educate students in this vital industry.

ESAB Welding & Cutting Products is a recognized leader in the welding industry. From time-honored processes to revolutionary technologies, ESAB’s filler metals, welding and cutting equipment, and accessories bring solutions to customers around the globe.

Siemens Industry, Inc. has added the significantly compact Sirius 3RM1 hybrid motor starter to its switching technology portfolio. The starter is designed as both a direct-on-line starter and a reversing starter with integrated overload protection for smaller motors with a rating of up to 3 hp, used, for example, for fans, pumps and lifting gear, as well as in machine tools. At just 22.5 mm wide, the Sirius 3RM1 reduces space requirements in the control cabinet by up to 82 percent. The motor starter facilitates the requirement in modern plant and machinery construction for space-saving components.

Besides its narrow profile, the Sirius 3RM1 is also characterized by economical hybrid technology that combines the benefits of semiconductor and relay systems in one device: the low-wear semiconductor components are responsible for connection and disconnection operations while an energy-efficient relay system is used during operation. This extends the motor starter’s service life and reduces maintenance demands.

Siemens also offers a special infeed system for the new motor starter which permits fast and simple implementation of group motor starter installations. As the main circuit is centrally connected to the infeed system, there is no need for separate wiring of the individual motor starters. The assembly with the infeed system is particularly suitable for conveyor systems in which a large number of motors are used on one conveyor belt. When maintenance is required, the individual motor starters from an existing assembly can be replaced with little effort thanks to the infeed system. Moreover, the motor starters can also be simply bussed in the control circuit using a device connector, so there is no need for extensive manual power supply wiring between the motor starters in the assembly. Wiring errors are reduced, and commissioning of the system is completed in less time.

Increased quality and decreased costs by extending the life of cooling lubricants: Innovative Machine- and Filter- concepts offer profitable alternatives.

The filtration of cooling fluids and grinding oils has become an important cost factor in today‘s metal working industry. Employing the right filtration system can save a lot of money and moreover improve product quality.

Vomat GmbH Germany supplies the metal industry with innovative filtration technology “Made in Germany”. One such example are their FA series 120 – 420 machines. Vomat specializes in micro filtration systems for metal cooling lubricants, which are used for materials, such as carbide, HSS, PKD and CBN.

Vomat’s product portfolio consists of standalone -, modular – , central plant and custom designed filtration systems. Options such as in- or external drive cooling, advanced sludge disposal or add-on tanks allow for optimal system adaptation to about any customer wish or application needs.

As mentioned above Vomat systems are available in different sizes and configurations. One of the more popular Vomat series is the Vomat FA 120 – 480 series. Depending on machine type one can filter 120 – 480 liters/minute (32–126 Gal/Min).

Stephan Hecht, General Manager with Oelheld U.S. Inc. (Exclusive US distributor) states: Vomat systems are perfect for micro filtration of cooling and cutting oils, used in processes, such as grinding, honing, lapping and other processes. Their compact size of 1,0 x 1,0 x 1,6m (40x40x60 inches) and their maintenance friendly design require much less floor space, and offer increased performance than larger machines of less innovative design.

Above a FA 240 with the highly effective automatic sludge disposal unit.

Innovative Back-wash and Filtration Technology

Vomat’s design uses full stream filtration with on demand automatic back-wash cycles to clean its high performance filter cartridges for extended service life. When in automatic cycle this technology guarantees, depending on the degree of accumulated dirt, not only a 100% separation of dirty and clean oil, but also NAS 7 (3µm) quality clean oil supply to the work piece. Moreover the use of newly designed settling filters does not require the use of any other filtration agents. The oil volume of the FA 120 – 420 series Vomat systems is about 500 liters, the variable oil volume about 200 liters.

The 2012 edition of the NFPA 70 E standard includes several new requirements for arc flash warning labels. But before you review your labels, don’t forget to first conduct an arc flash hazard analysis. An arc flash hazard analysis will help you determine the arc flash boundary for operating systems, the incident energy at the working distance, and the personal protective equipment necessary for applications within the arc flash boundary.

After you’ve completed your arc flash hazard analysis, it’s time to review your labels and make sure they are up-to-date with the new labeling requirements outlined in the 2012 NFPA 70E. [Note that labels applied prior to September 30, 2011 are acceptable if they contain the available incident energy or required level of PPE.] According to Article 130.5 (C), all of your electrical equipment—such as switchboards, panel boards, industrial control panels and other units that require examination, adjustment, servicing or maintenance while energized—must be marked with a label.

1. Arc Flash labels must include at least one of the following:

Available incident energy and the corresponding working distance. Incident energy is the amount of energy impressed on a surface, a certain distance away from the source that is generated during an electrical arc event.

Minimum arc rating of clothing. Arc rated clothing indicates it has been tested for exposure to an electrical arc. This was formally expressed as flame resistant in previous NFPA editions

Required Level of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Arc rating of PPE should correspond with the appropriate hazard level and incident energy present.

Highest Hazard/Risk Category (HRC) for the equipment. Hazard/risk categories range from 0-4 and help indicate arc rating, appropriate PPE and clothing.

2. Nominal System Voltage:

The voltage assigned to a circuit or system for the purpose of conveniently designating its voltage class (i.e., a 12-volt battery, 24-volt system, or a 480-volt electrical panel.)

3. Arc Flash Boundary

The Arc Flash Boundary identifies systems of 50 volts and greater where the distance at which the incident energy level equals 1.2 cal/cm2. This must be identified on a label because this incident energy distance can result in a second degree burn if skin is unprotected.

In addition, arc flash labels can identify other important boundaries including:

Limited Approach Boundary – This approach identifies the distance from the exposed energized electrical conductor or circuit part in which a shock hazard exists.

Prohibited Approach Boundary – This approach identifies the distance from the exposed energized electrical conductor or circuit part in which work is considered the same as making contact with the electrical conductor or circuit part.

Restricted Approach Boundary – This approach identifies the distance from the exposed energized electrical conductor or circuit part in which there is an increased risk of shock, due to electrical arc-over combined with inadvertent movement, for personnel working in close proximity.

Having the right tools for the job is important no matter what your industry is; but when it comes to lockout safety, it’s critical that you have the most versatile and sure-fit devices available to your employees.

In this article, we’ll review the four types of lockout devices that are available to help you meet OSHA requirements in your facility and also establish responsibility and accountability among your employees.

1. Padlocks

Like all lockout devices, safety lockout padlocks must be provided by the employer and standardized. Safety padlocks must be distinguishable from other locks, used only for lockout purposes and always identified with the name of the person who has applied the lock.

Lockout padlocks are optimally key retaining to ensure the padlock is secured and locked before the key can be removed. Best practice for safety padlocks is to choose a lightweight, non-conductive padlock that can be easily customizable for your facility.

2. Tags

Tags play a critical role in Lockout/Tagout. They provide a warning against the hazardous conditions that could occur if a machine or piece of equipment is energized. Tags communicate important information to describe the lockout condition or photo identification of the employee performing the maintenance.

Lockout tags are commonly used in two ways. They can be used with locks in order to identify the lock owner, or on an exception basis, tags can be used without a lock. If the tag is used without a lock, OSHA stipulates that the tag must:

Withstand the environment to which it is exposed

Be standardized and distinguished from other tags

Include clear warnings and instructions

Be attached using a non-reusable, self-locking device capable of withstanding 50 pounds of pull force.

3. Devices

There are many different types of lockout devices available to effectively and safely secure energy isolation points. Here are three types of lockout devices that will help ensure the energy isolation and lockout that are needed in every facility.

Electrical Lockout Devices: These lockout devices provide ways to secure the electrical power of machinery equipment in an off position. Examples include circuit breaker lockout devices and an electrical plug lockout device.

Multi-Purpose Cable Lockout Devices: There are lockout occasions when a padlock or other fixed device will not provide the flexibility required for proper lockout. Oftentimes a single cable lockout device is used to lock out several energy isolation points.

Valve Lockout Devices: There are a wide variety of valves that supply compressed gasses, liquids, steam and more in a facility. A valve lockout device will conceal or physically prevent the valve’s operation. The four main types include gate valves, ball valves, plug valves and butterfly valves.

4. Safety Hasps

Safety hasps permit multiple workers to apply their padlocks to a single energy isolation point. The two categories of safety hasps are labeled lockout hasps, which feature write-on labels, and durable steel lockout hasps that are made of high tensile steel.

One of the most important steps in having a compliant lockout program is equipping your employees with the proper tools and warning devices. In addition to having a thorough program, OSHA also requires written lockout procedures for each individual piece of energized equipment. Graphical lockout procedures are considered a best practice for your facility because they provide clear and visually intuitive instructions to employees—at the point of need. Implementing these four lockout solutions, along with the appropriate procedures and training, will ensure that your facility is OSHA-compliant.

Safety and Product Integrity

Sweating slab isn’t just annoying–it creates a potentially hazardous environment for employees on foot, as well as those operating mechanical equipment.

For example, in Charlotte, N.C., HVAC equipment distributor N.B. Handy experienced concrete sweating at any change in temperature or humidity. This created a standing puddle that was referred to as “Lake Handy.”

“The forklifts were unsafe to drive because they couldn’t stop, and people would slip on the water,” said N.B. Handy Operations Manager Blake Boleman. “We had one forklift go through the wall in our sales room—luckily, no one was hurt. The products would get water on them too.”

Research shows why this is a grave area of concern for warehouse owners and managers, such as those from N.B. Handy. According to the National Floor Safety Institute, the majority of workers’ compensation claims are attributed to employees falling on slick floors1, and these accidents are also the leading cause of occupational injury for people aged 15-24 years. Falls account for over 8 million hospital emergency room visits, representing the leading cause of visits (21.3%). Rectifying such issues help businesses operate more efficiently and effectively, in addition to avoiding costly claims.

Condensation also creates product integrity issues when cold materials, such as metal, are brought into a warmer space. It may take hours, or even days, for the temperature of the delivered product to approach the inside air temperature. During this warm-up period, the item’s surface temperature is initially below the dew point temperature of the air, leading to condensation on its surface. Besides moisture being a slippery situation, it can also lead to corroded metal, damp packaging and paper, mold and a host of other unpleasant issues.

Solving Sweating Slab

Though you can’t control nature’s seasonal fluctuations, there are solutions to prevent sweating slab from compromising product integrity and employee safety. For example, both air conditioning and heating systems decrease the amount of time that warm air is in contact with cold surfaces. However, outfitting large, tall warehouse environments with full HVAC systems is often impractical and expensive. Instead, introducing gentle air movement through the installation of high volume, low speed fans, is the simplest and most affordable solution.

While small box fans might seem like the quickest fix, they present trip hazards because of cords in high-traffic areas, and they are often incapable of moving air efficiency throughout a big space. Large diameter, low speed overhead fans eliminate trip hazards associated with small fans, and they also move massive amounts of air for little cost.

Thoroughly mixing the air within the space will also help to raise the slab temperature more quickly, shortening the season for condensation. Large diameter fans reduce concrete sweat by moving stagnant air off the cold surface before it has a chance to cool down enough to leave telltale puddles behind.

“Increasing air speed at the floor level and destratification of air using large diameter, low speed fans is an effective way to mitigate condensation issues,” said Christian Taber, senior applications engineer and LEED® AP for Big Ass Fans®. “This increased air movement and air temperature at the floor reduces condensation improving safety, and in certain scenarios, improving product integrity as well.”

Returning to the previous example, N.B. Handy installed six 20-ft. diameter fans and said goodbye to their watery woes. After they installed the large diameter fans, “Lake Handy” experienced a record drought, drying up completely and creating safer working conditions.

“The fans have solved our problems,” Boleman said. “I couldn’t be happier.”

Conclusion

While sweating slab can be a dangerous nuisance to managers and employees, a simple, effective solution resolves the issue easily. High volume, low speed fans have a multitude of benefits beyond mitigating condensation issues. Such fans can also improve worker comfort year round, reduce heating costs in the winter and improve indoor air quality.
